Students Excel at UIL Academic Competition

Forty-nine elementary school students in grades 2nd through 5th attended the UIL Academics competitions at Lago Vista Elementary School.

This year, the UIL academic committee voted to combine the North and South Zone together for the elementary School competitions. As a result, Gateway’s elementary students competed against Blanco, Johnson City, Lago Vista, Florence and Jarrell ISD students.

The Gateway Middle School students in grades 6th-8th attended the Academic UIL District competitions in Jarrell. Gateway Middle School students competed against, Jarrell, and Florence ISD students. Gateway College Prep’s Middle School overall scores placed us as 1st Place Winners ---District 25 AAA Academics Zone.

Students in 2nd through 8th grade competed in 13 different UIL Academic categories: Art, Calculator Application, Creative Writing, Dictionary Skills, Listening Skills, Maps, Graphs, & Charts, Mathematics, Music Memory, Number Sense, Oral Reading, Ready Writing, Social Studies, Spelling, and Storytelling.

Highlights from the UIL meet include 29 individual medals for elementary school students and 76 medals for middle school students for a combined total of 105 metals. Seven of the 29 medals for the elementary school were first place district winners and 27 of 76 medals for the middle school student were first place district winners for a combined total of 34 district first place winners.

Gateway Middle School students had 13 teams awarded with the highest point totals earned by the students’ participation. These 13 teams earned first place awards as district champs in the areas of: Calculator Applications, Dictionary Skills, Listening Skills, Maps, Graphs and Charts, Mathematics, Number Sense, Social Studies and Spelling.
