School Programs - Elementary
At the Core: Highly Qualified, Invested Teachers:
The backbone of any school is its teachers. Gateway teachers (at all levels) are chosen for their passion, drive, and commitment to not only teaching academic content but to the development of the whole child. Prospective teachers go through a thorough screening and interview process which includes guided interactions with current staff and students. While all teachers hired must be highly qualified (according to state and federal guidelines), Gateway is also committed to attracting, developing, and retaining certified teachers that have an entrepreneurial spirit. We are proud of the diverse backgrounds and experiences that our teaching staff brings to our school.
The Focus of our Classes:
Elementary classrooms at Gateway are centered on strong instructional practices in all classes. The majority of time is spent on the development of reading, writing, and math skills. Age-appropriate skills (such as penmanship and living skills) will be addressed as well. Our philosophy is that students will be prepared for the rigors of a college-preparatory middle and high school program only after learning the fundamentals reading, writing, and math. Students will also be given opportunities within foreign language, art, music, physical education, and other enrichment activities. It is crucial that elementary students are taught HOW to learn and to think critically from an early age. Curricula in ALL areas (core and enrichment) is developed by teachers in accordance with the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). Gateway strongly believes that teachers develop their curricula with creativity and relevance in mind.
A Longer, More Enriching, and More Engaging School Day
Gateway strives to be responsive to the needs of our families, and is proud to say that we will have families with students in elementary, middle, and high school. For this reason, we are aligning our start and end times so that transportation and other logistics are easier for parents. The school day will run from 7:45 AM to 2:45 PM. However, students can be dropped off as early as 7:00 AM and may stay as late as 6:00 PM in our after school academic program. Whenever students are on campus, they will be supervised by adult staff members and screened volunteers who must pass criminal background checks. Elementary students will be provided with a daily recess. Students may bring their own lunch, if desired, or purchase lunch from our on-site cafeteria.
Time before school and after school may also include participation in tutoring, clubs, sports, and other activities designed to enhance the overall development of students.
Gateway provides a small, intimate learning environment with ample (and growing) enrichment opportunities for students of all ages. Our goal is to prepare students for the rigors of 4 year college, while offering students an engaging, hands-on education. We see elementary school as the first step on a long road. Due to our small size, the level of articulation and cooperation amongst our staff is higher than that in a traditional school district. Not only can teachers cooperatively plan and create courses and curricula, but courses and skills can be aligned from Kindergarten through 12th grade.
By nurturing students from an early age, and working cooperatively with parents, our students will be ready for the challenges that await them as adults as they are taught to enjoy learning and are able to help create a positive school culture.
We encourage you to contact us with further questions, and welcome you to visit our campus.
Elementary After School Enrichment Options
The following activities are being offered to engage our younger students in meaningful, engaging, and structured activities that are aligned to our mission of creating citizens, scholars, athletes, and artists. Please remember that additional activities will be offered based on student interest and staff availability. We believe that education does not end when classes are over, and that students of all ages must be actively involved in enrichment opportunities to develop skills, and stretch their horizons. All activities will take place at the Gateway campus (unless otherwise noted) and will be under the supervision of Gateway faculty and staff or an outside contractor who has been cleared through the fingerprinting process. At no time will students be left unsupervised. As parents, your involvement is most welcome!
In addition to structured activities, students in need of academic support will have the opportunity to attend tutoring. Tutoring, when deemed necessary by faculty, can also be required.
Elementary Dance Team: This is an opportunity for all students (experienced or non-experienced) in grades K-4 to dance on a competitive studio style dance team. Members will compete in at least one competitive event and perform at several community events throughout the course of the year. They will also have the opportunity to work and perform with our Middle School and High School teams at sporting events.
Competitive Academics: Students in upper elementary grades will have the opportunity to participate and compete in events such as knowledge competitions, spelling competitions, and math competitions against teams from other schools in the area through UIL academics and Math Pentathlon. This is also an excellent way for students to supplement the skills and knowledge that they are acquiring in their classes.
Ecology and Gardening Club: Participants in the ecology club will learn and discuss environmental issues, strategies and solutions and practice the role of active environment stewards by promoting green and healthy school practices that enhance student health and learning while saving resources that include but are not limited to: recycling, campus green area creating and maintenance (pond, gardens, bird houses), tree planting, composting, and dissemination of green practices. This is a “hands-on” club and students will see the results of their learning and actions on a daily basis.
Other current activities can be found under the Student Life tab.
